- Scientists in Brazil launched the Amazon Free-Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (Amazon FACE) experiment near Manaus.
- The project studies how the Amazon rainforest will respond to elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide levels expected by 2050–2060.
- 6 steel tower rings were installed around groups of 50–70 mature trees for the experiment.
- 3 rings were fumigated with future CO₂ concentrations, while the remaining rings served as control plots.
- Sensors continuously record data on photosynthesis, oxygen release, and water vapor exchange every 10 minutes.
- The experiment provides critical data for climate modelling, rainforest carbon storage, and international climate policy deliberations.
