  • Canada lost its measles elimination status in 2025 after over 5,000 cases were reported nationwide.
  • The outbreak began in October 2024 and affected many provinces and the Northwest Territories.
  • Measles is highly infectious, spread through the air via coughs and sneezes, and preventable by the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine.
  • Vaccination coverage in Canada dropped from 89.5 percent in 2019 to 82.5 percent in 2023, below the 95 percent needed for herd immunity.
