New Dragonfly Species in Western Ghats

  • A new dragonfly species named Lyriothemis abrahami has been discovered in the Western Ghats.
  • The dragonfly was named in the very honour of Abraham Samuel, a well-known odonatologist from Kerala.
  • It is endemic to the southern and central Western Ghats and found in lowland rainforests as well as mid-elevation evergreen and deciduous forests.
  • With this addition, Kerala’s odonate (dragonflies and damselflies) species count has risen to 191, with 78 species found only in the region.
