The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared Indonesia free from poliovirus type 2.
Poliovirus is a highly infectious virus that can cause paralysis and sometimes death, mostly affecting children under five years old.
No poliovirus was detected in children or the environment since June 2024.
The outbreak began in October 2022 in Aceh and spread to multiple provinces, with the last case reported on June 27, 2024.
Vaccination coverage improved, with children receiving the second dose of Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) rising from 63% in 2023 to 73% in 2024.
Indonesia introduced the hexavalent vaccine combining DPT-HB-Hib (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type B) and IPV (Inactivated Polio Vaccine), offering protection against six diseases in a single shot.
