The Assam Cabinet has approved a bill to ban polygamy in the state.
The Bill prohibits any individual from marrying if they already have a living spouse, are not legally separated, or if a divorce decree has not dissolved their previous marriage.
Some exceptions may apply for the Sixth Schedule areas.
Conviction under the Bill may lead to rigorous imprisonment of up to seven years.
The government plans to create a fund to compensate women affected by polygamy.
