NASA’s OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer) spacecraft returned samples from asteroid Bennu in 2023.
Scientists detected glucose, a six-carbon sugar used as energy.
Ribose, a five-carbon sugar essential for RNA (Ribonucleic Acid), was also found.
Other organic compounds identified include amino acids, nucleobases, and carboxylic acids.
Deoxyribose, the sugar in DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid), was not detected.
