Sugars in Asteroid Bennu

  • NASA’s OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer) spacecraft returned samples from asteroid Bennu in 2023.
  • Scientists detected glucose, a six-carbon sugar used as energy.
  • Ribose, a five-carbon sugar essential for RNA (Ribonucleic Acid), was also found.
  • Other organic compounds identified include amino acids, nucleobases, and carboxylic acids.
  • Deoxyribose, the sugar in DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid), was not detected.
