  Global Investors Meet - 2015

  • The first edition of the Global Investors Meet which was held on 9th and 10th September 2015 at Chennai.
  • During that two-day summit, the Government of Tamil Nadu attracted investments worth over 2.40 lakh crores (about USD 36 Billion).
  • There were more than 5,000 delegates from India and across the world who participated in this meet.
  • Around 100 MoUs were signed during GIM-2015.

 Global investors Meet – 2019

  • Encouraged by the success of GIM 2015, the Government of Tamil Nadu is organized GIM 2019 on 23rd and 24th January 2019 at Chennai Trade Centre, Chennai.
  • This summit showcased the competitive strengths and opportunities in Tamil Nadu.
  • Hence, GIM 2019 provides an ideal platform for understanding Tamil Nadu as a preferred Investor’s Choice.

Aerospace & Defence
  • Home to India’s First Defence Corridor.
  • Aerospace Park in Sriperumbudur (Vallam-Vadagal).
  • A Maintenance Repair Overhauling (MRO) complex is being planned in Chennai.
Agro & Food Processing
  • In India, Tamil Nadu is the
    • 2nd largest producer of Poultry & Dairy
    • 2nd largest producer of Coconut
    • 3rd largest producer of Tea & Coffee
    • 7th largest producer of Fruits.
  • Tamil Nadu ranks
    • 1st in terms of productivity of fruit crops like Papaya, Sapota & Pomegranate
    • 2nd in Banana cultivation area.

Automobiles & Auto Components
  • Tamil Nadu is one of the top 10 automobile hubs in the world.
  • Tamil Nadu accounted for 45% of India's motor vehicle / car exports in 2017-18.

  • Tamil Nadu is the largest tyre manufacturer in the country.
Chemicals & Petrochemicals
  • The State ranks 3rd in India’s Total Chemical Output, accounting for 6% of National Production.
  • The State has 2588 Chemical Manufacturing Factories.
  • Chemicals & Petrochemicals exports from Tamil Nadu stood at USD 913.77 million - FY 2017-18.
  • The State has prominent Plastics/Polymer Research Institutions (CIPET – Institute of Plastic technology).
  • A Polymer Industries Park is being established by Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) in Tiruvallur district.

  • Established Polymer Industry Ecosystem Home to over 8000 small and medium enterprises providing employment to more than 10 lakh people.
Electronics & Hardware
  • Tamil Nadu ranks 2nd in India in Computer, Electronics and Optical Products manufacturing, accounting for 16% of National Production.
  • The state ranked 3rd in terms of Electronic Exports (USD 1.27 billion) in FY 2017-18.
  • There are two sector-specific SEZs for Electronics & Hardware Sector in Kancheepuram district. They are
    • Electronic/Telecommunication Hardware Hi-Tech SEZ (486 acre) in Sriperumbudur
    • Electronic Hardware Hi-Tech SEZ (348 acre) in Oragadam.
Heavy Engineering
  • Tamil Nadu ranks 3rd in India in production of General Purpose and Special Purpose Machinery.
  • Ranks 2nd in India in Heavy Engineering Exports - FY 2017-18.
  • Coimbatore – Salem Industrial Corridor also has a presence of manufacturers of Industrial Machinery, General Purpose Machinery, etc.
  • 3 SEZs supporting the growth of Heavy Engineering sector are
    • Engineering sector SEZ (263 acre) in Perundurai, Erode District
    • Transport Engineering SEZ (255 acre) in Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli District
    • Sector specific SEZ for Engineering (134 acre) in Ranipet, Vellore District.
IT
  • 7% of the total engineering graduates in the State are from Computer Science/ IT/ Electronics/ Communication fields.
  • Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (ELCOT) has created 8 IT Special Economic Zones in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai (2 places), Trichy, Salem, Tirunelveli and Hosur.
Infrastructure
  • State has 4 international and 2 domestic airports.
  • Freight handled by the state accounted for 11.81% of India’s total freight volume in tonnes.
  • State is amongst the top 9 markets globally in renewable power energy.

  • Four large and 22 other ports.
Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology
  • Tamil Nadu is the 5th largest Pharmaceutical Manufacturing State in the Country.
  • The State accounts for over 10% of National Pharma Production.
  • A Medi Park project is being established by HLL Lifecare Ltd, a Government of India Enterprise and TIDCO.
  • Tamil Nadu has India’s largest Agricultural University with 36 Agro Technology Research Stations Supporting in Biotech.
Renewable Energy
  • Tamil Nadu Ranks 9th Globally in Net Share of Wind Energy in Total Power Generation.
  • Tamil Nadu is the leader in Renewable Energy Sector among all other Indian states with a Total Installed Capacity of 11,113 MW.
  • Aralvaimozhi in Kanyakumari district has the largest Wind Power Capacity in India (1,500 MW).
Skill Development
  • TNSDC (Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation) has trained more than 105,000 candidates in 2017-18.
  • Each year 30% of the seats are reserved for women candidates.
  • Skill development training initiatives are taken up by SIPCOT to cater to the skill requirement of industries set up within SIPCOT.
Textiles & Apparels
  • Tamil Nadu contributes to 1/3rd of the Textile Business in India making it the Textile Valley of India.
  • Tamil Nadu ranks
    • 1st in production of Cotton Yarn
    • 1st in export of Cotton Yarn
    • 2nd in production of Blended Yarn.
  • Tirupur is called the ‘Knitting City’; Coimbatore is known as the ‘Manchester of South India’.
  • Tamil Nadu has the highest number of textile mills in India.
  • Footwear and Leather Products SEZ (154 acre) is a sector-specific SEZ in Irungattukottai, Kancheepuram district.

 

Outcomes
  • The Tamil Nadu government has signed 304 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements entailing investments to the tune of over 3,00,431 crore in GIM-II.
  • There were investments in relatively new sectors like school education, higher education, office space and tourism.

 Major Investments

  • Tyre-maker MRF will invest Rs 3,100 crore for expanding the capacity at its two plants in the State.
  • PSA France will invest Rs 1,250 crore for manufacturing Peugeot cars and Eicher Motors would take up another expansion project at an investment of Rs 1,500 crore.
  • The Adani group will be investing Rs 10,000 crore on the expansion of Katupalli Port near Chennai.
  • Foxconn, with an investment of Rs 2,500 crore, will start manufacturing smartphones in the State.
  • In the IT sector, the government has signed 10 MoUs. Netlink Infocom, Malaysia, has inked a deal for Rs 2,500 crore.
  • Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited would invest Rs 27,400 crore in Nagapattinam to establish a major petroleum refinery.
  • 16 MoUs were signed between Japanese firms and TN govt as Japan plans to diversify its business interests with a focus on tourism and setting up of language centres to employ Indians in their firms.

 Next Meet

  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Palaniswami announced the global investor meetings will be held every two years and the next one will be in 2021.
