The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) completed 10 years of digital payments in India on 25 August 2026.
UPI was launched in 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
Annual UPI transactions increased from 1.78 crore in Financial Year (FY) 2016-17 to over 24,162 crores in FY 2025-26, a 13,000-fold rise.
Transaction value increased from ₹0.07 lakh crore to about ₹314 lakh crore, a rise of over 4,000 times.
UPI is currently operational in 11 countries: United Arab Emirates, France, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece and the Maldives.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has recognised UPI as the world’s largest real-time payment system by transaction volume.
