A Private Member’s Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in December 2025 to amend the 10th Schedule of the Constitution.
The Bill seeks to allow Members of Parliament (MPs) to vote independently on Bills and Motions, reducing strict party whip enforcement.
The 10th Schedule was added by the 52nd Amendment Act, 1985.
It was designed to prevent unprincipled defections and ensure political stability.
Whips are the directions issued by the political parties to MPs/MLAs to vote in a particular manner; defying a whip can lead to disqualification under the 10th Schedule.
