150 Years of Vande Mataram

  • The Ministry of Ayush organised a mass singing event at Ayush Bhawan, New Delhi, to mark 150 years of India’s national song Vande Mataram.
  • Vande Mataram was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in the 1870s and published in his novel Anandamath in 1882.
  • The song was adopted as the national song of the Republic of India in 1950.
  • It was sung publicly in protests, meetings, and gatherings, often used as a slogan— “Vande Mataram!”—by freedom fighters across the country.
  • In 1896, Rabindranath Tagore sang Vande Mataram at the Indian National Congress session in Calcutta.
  • In 1938, the Hyderabad government had banned singing Vande Mataram in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region.
  • It was sparking the Vande Mataram Movement of Gulbarga.
