CP Radhakrishnan was elected as the 15th Vice President of India on September 09.
He defeated the opposition INDIA bloc’s candidate, Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, by securing 452 first preference votes.
The Vice President’s post has been vacant since July 21 after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned due to health reasons.
He served as Governor of Maharashtra from July 2024 and previously held governorships of Jharkhand, Telangana (additional charge), and Puducherry (additional charge).
Radhakrishnan was a two-time MP from Coimbatore and began his political career with the RSS and Bharatiya Jana Sangh.
He served as the BJP’s Tamil Nadu state president and chaired the Parliamentary Standing Committee.
From 2016 to 2020, he chaired the Coir Board under the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME).
Between 2020 and 2022, he was the BJP’s in-charge for Kerala and led international delegations to Asia, Europe, and North America.
