- Astronomers have confirmed the discovery of a new quasi-moon named 2025 PN7 orbiting near Earth.
- 2025 PN7 has followed a path near Earth’s orbit around the Sun for nearly 60 years, but was only recently detected.
- It is about 30 metres (98 feet) in diameter, making it difficult to observe due to its small size and low reflectivity.
- A quasi-moon shares Earth’s orbit in a 1:1 resonance with the Sun but is not gravitationally bound to Earth.
- Unlike mini-moons, which are temporarily captured by Earth’s gravity, quasi-moons remain in solar orbit alongside Earth.
- 2025 PN7 belongs to the Arjuna group of near-Earth asteroids that have Earth-like orbits.
- Other known quasi-moons like Kamo’oalewa and 2024 PT5 also show signs of a possible lunar origin.
- 2025 PN7 is expected to stay near Earth for about 60 more years before moving into a horseshoe-shaped orbit.
