  • India hosted the international conference “50 Years of BWC: Strengthening Biosecurity for the Global South” in New Delhi.
  • The Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) is the first multilateral treaty banning biological and toxin weapons.
  • The treaty prohibits the development, production, stockpiling, transfer, and use of biological weapons.
  • It was opened for signature on 10 April 1972 and entered into force on 26 March 1975; India is a founding State Party.
  • The BWC holds review conferences every five years and promotes the peaceful use of biological science, especially for developing countries.
