Eight firefly species have been identified in Anamalai Tiger Reserve through Tamil Nadu’s first genetic study on fireflies.
The study was conducted by the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC), Vandalur.
The study covered 10 sites across Manambolly, Pollachi and Ulandy forest ranges in the reserve.
The species identified were Abscondita perplexa, Abscondita terminalis, Asymmetricata humeralis, three Curtos species, Lamprigera sp. and Pyrocoelia sp.
Phototactic behaviour analysis showed Abscondita perplexa preferred darkness and avoided most coloured lights.
White light was found to be neutral in its response to Abscondita perplexa.
