- Eight firefly species have been identified in Anamalai Tiger Reserve through Tamil Nadu’s first genetic study on fireflies.
- The study was conducted by the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC), Vandalur.
- The study covered 10 sites across Manambolly, Pollachi and Ulandy forest ranges in the reserve.
- The species identified were Abscondita perplexa, Abscondita terminalis, Asymmetricata humeralis, three Curtos species, Lamprigera sp. and Pyrocoelia sp.
- Phototactic behaviour analysis showed Abscondita perplexa preferred darkness and avoided most coloured lights.
- White light was found to be neutral in its response to Abscondita perplexa.
