- Forest Survey of India (FSI) has stopped issuing alerts from the AI-based Anavaran deforestation system since early 2026.
- The Anavaran system is an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based platform that detects forest loss using satellite data.
- It was launched in January 2024 to give near real-time alerts on deforestation to State Forest departments every 15 days.
- The system uses data from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellites of the European Space Agency.
- It works on machine learning and satellite images to identify changes in forest cover with high accuracy (10–20 metre resolution).
- FSI works under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
