Indian Air Force Group Captain and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla was awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, on Republic Day 2026.
The award recognises his bravery and courage during the Axiom Mission 4 to the International Space Station (ISS).
Shukla served as the primary mission pilot, ensuring safety and success during critical orbital operations.
He became the first Indian to set foot on the ISS since Rakesh Sharma in 1984, marking India’s return to human spaceflight.
The Ax-4 mission included international crew members and focused on scientific experiments, technology demonstrations, and collaboration.
