  • The Epigraphy Division of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has begun digitising all Tamil estampages by scanning them and uploading them to a dedicated online repository for easy access.
  • ASI holds 24,806 Tamil estampages, and scanning has been completed for 13,740, covering nearly 25,000 Tamil inscriptions.
  • The division is also digitising estampages of inscriptions in other Indian languages as well as Arabic and Persian.
  • The work is part of the Bharat Shared Repository of Inscriptions (Bharat SHRI).
  • Bharat SHRI is a digital epigraphy museum that aims to create a complete digital archive of all recorded inscriptions.
  • Each scanned estampage includes descriptive metadata mentioning its location, king, dynasty, language, script, period and transcript.
  • The project helps scholars and the public access inscription data easily through a single digital platform.
