The Epigraphy Division of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has begun digitising all Tamil estampages by scanning them and uploading them to a dedicated online repository for easy access.
ASI holds 24,806 Tamil estampages, and scanning has been completed for 13,740, covering nearly 25,000 Tamil inscriptions.
The division is also digitising estampages of inscriptions in other Indian languages as well as Arabic and Persian.
The work is part of the Bharat Shared Repository of Inscriptions (Bharat SHRI).
Bharat SHRI is a digital epigraphy museum that aims to create a complete digital archive of all recorded inscriptions.
Each scanned estampage includes descriptive metadata mentioning its location, king, dynasty, language, script, period and transcript.
The project helps scholars and the public access inscription data easily through a single digital platform.
