- The day is observed to mark the arrival of Chaolung Sukapha in Assam in 1228.
- Sukapha, a Tai prince from Mong Mao (present-day Dehong Dai and Jingpo Prefecture, China), founded the Ahom Kingdom.
- The Ahom rule lasted for nearly 600 years until 1826 and protected Assam from several Mughal invasions.
- Ahom society was organised into khels (clans), each controlling multiple villages.
