- Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) became India’s first railway zone to use compostable bioplastic bags on trains.
- The initiative began on August 15, 2025, with the distribution of linen in biodegradable bags.
- The ISO17088-compliant bioplastic was developed at Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G).
- The pilot project covers 25 trains and includes 40,000 bags across Assam, Bihar, Bengal, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh.
