CJI B.R. Gavai inaugurated the Bombay High Court’s circuit bench at Kolhapur on August 17, 2025.
The bench became functional from August 18, 2025, with one division bench and two single benches.
It had jurisdiction over six districts: Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg.
This made Kolhapur the third circuit bench in Maharashtra after Nagpur and Aurangabad, and the fourth overall, including Porvorim in Goa.
Apart from the principal bench in Mumbai, the Bombay High Court had permanent benches at Nagpur in Vidarbha and Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) in Marathwada.
A third bench of the Bombay High Court also sat in the adjoining state of Goa at Porvorim.
The High Court of Bombay served the states of Maharashtra and Goa, and the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
It was one of the oldest high courts in India, established under the Indian High Courts Act of 1861.
