January 24 , 2026 14 hrs 0 min 36 0
  • Brandt’s hedgehog (Paraechinus hypomelas) has been discovered in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • It was first sighted in 2024 in the Rajouri–Poonch region and confirmed through DNA analysis and morphometric studies.
  • The species was previously known in Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and parts of Central Asia.
  • The discovery suggests possible range expansion due to climate change, habitat connectivity, and food availability.
  • It was found in ecotone zones between forests and agricultural fields and feeds on rodents.
