Butterfly-Shaped Coronal Hole

September 17 , 2025 16 hrs 0 min 22 0
  • NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory photographed a 5,00,000-kilometre-wide butterfly-shaped coronal hole on the Sun on September 11, 2025.
  • Coronal holes are regions where the Sun’s magnetic fields open, allowing solar wind to escape into space.
  • The solar wind from this coronal hole is projected to reach Earth around September 14, 2025.
  • The event’s timing near the equinox increases geomagnetic risk due to the Russell–McPherron effect.
  • These storms could potentially affect satellite operations and other technological systems on Earth.
