The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA), headed by the Prime Minister, has approved caste enumeration in the forthcoming population census.
Every Census in independent India from 1951 to 2011 has published data on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, but not on other castes.
Before that, every Census until 1931 had data on caste.
However, in 1941, caste-based data was collected but not published.
The Mandal Commission estimated the OBC population at 52%.
As per Article 246 of the Constitution of India, the subject of Census is listed at number 69 in the Union List of the Seventh Schedule, making it a Union subject.
In 2022, Bihar became the first state in the independent India to successfully enumerate all castes.
Later, Karnataka and Telangana have also undertaken the caste census.
