- Prime Minister inaugurated the Chenab railway bridge, the world’s highest rail bridge in Jammu & Kashmir.
- He also inaugurated the Anji bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge.
- Chenab bridge is 359 metres above the riverbed and 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower.
- This railway project was sanctioned in 1995 when Narasimha Rao was the Prime Minister.
- In 2002, Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared it a national project.
- Of the 272-kilometre stretch between Udhampur, Srinagar and Baramulla, 160 km was already inaugurated before 2014.
- Anji Bridge stands tall as India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge in the Himalayan terrain.
- It is establishing a vital link in the Katra-Banihal portion of the Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Line.
- The project was overseen by Konkan Railway Corporation of the Indian Railways.
- The Prime Minister has also flagged off a Vande Bharat train service between Katra and Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir.
- This is the first train connection between the Kashmir valley and the Jammu region.
- The Prime Minister has also dedicated the 272 km long Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project to the nation.
- The USBRL also has India’s longest transportation tunnel, T50, which spans 12.77 kilometres between Khari and Sumber in Jammu and Kashmir.
