- The proposal is for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity under the 2003 Convention.
- The Chhath festival is dedicated to the Sun god and Goddess Chhathi Maiya.
- It is one of India’s oldest festivals, with major celebrations in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
- The festival is also observed by diaspora communities in Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, the United Arab Emirates, and the Netherlands.
- India currently has 15 elements inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
