  • The Union Ministry of Culture is pursuing a multinational nomination of the Chhath festival for UNESCO recognition.
  • The proposal is for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity under the 2003 Convention.
  • The Chhath festival is dedicated to the Sun god and Goddess Chhathi Maiya.
  • It is one of India’s oldest festivals, with major celebrations in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
  • The festival is also observed by diaspora communities in Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, the United Arab Emirates, and the Netherlands.
  • India currently has 15 elements inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
