- On 30 June, Chile and Argentina became the coldest places on Earth outside the polar regions.
- Temperatures dropped to minus 15 degrees Celsius or 5 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas.
- The cold wave was caused by a polar-origin anticyclone, a high-pressure weather system.
