Construction Ban - Pallikaranai Marshland

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered a stop to all construction activities within one kilometre of the Pallikaranai Marshland.
This decision was taken Suo motu based on media reports of landfilling and construction inside the Perumbakkam wetland.
Perumbakkam village, located 246 metres from the marsh boundary, was identified as the affected site.
The Pallikaranai Marshland was declared a Ramsar Site in 2022 and plays a key role in flood mitigation.
The Tamil Nadu State Wetland Authority (TNSWA) has provisionally marked a one-kilometre buffer using topographical and hydrological tools.
