- The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered a stop to all construction activities within one kilometre of the Pallikaranai Marshland.
- This decision was taken Suo motu based on media reports of landfilling and construction inside the Perumbakkam wetland.
- Perumbakkam village, located 246 metres from the marsh boundary, was identified as the affected site.
- The Pallikaranai Marshland was declared a Ramsar Site in 2022 and plays a key role in flood mitigation.
- The Tamil Nadu State Wetland Authority (TNSWA) has provisionally marked a one-kilometre buffer using topographical and hydrological tools.
