Criminal cases against Chief Ministers

  • Forty per cent of chief ministers face criminal cases, according to an ADR report.
  • Twelve out of thirty Chief Ministers (CMs) in India have declared criminal cases against themselves.
  • Revanth Reddy (Telangana) has the highest number of cases at 89, followed by M.K. Stalin (Tamil Nadu) with 47.
  • Chandrababu Naidu (Andhra Pradesh) has declared 19 cases, Siddaramaiah (Karnataka) 13, and Hemant Soren (Jharkhand) five.
  • Devendra Fadnavis (Maharashtra) and Sukhvinder Singh (Himachal Pradesh) have four cases each, Pinarayi Vijayan (Kerala) two, and Bhagwant Mann (Punjab) one.
  • Ten CMs (33%) have declared serious criminal cases like attempt to murder, kidnapping, bribery, and intimidation.
  • The report was released as the Centre introduced bills to remove PMs, CMs, and Ministers arrested for 30 days on serious charges.
  • The Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) said this in an analysis report.
