Dairy sector in India 2025

  • India’s dairy sector has expanded by 70% over the last 11 years.
  • With milk production rising from 146 million tonnes in 2014-15 to 239 million tonnes in 2023-24.
  • The government aims to establish over 75,000 dairy cooperatives by 2029.
  • Three new multi-state cooperative societies have been approved:
    • One for animal feed production, disease control, and artificial insemination;
    • Second for developing cow dung management models and
    • The third is for the circular use of dead cattle remains.
  • The newly inaugurated Sabar Dairy Plant in Haryana is India’s largest production unit for curd, buttermilk, and yogurt.
  • India’s milk processing capacity currently stands at 660 lakh litres per day, with a target to reach 100 million litres by 2028-29.
  • The per capita milk availability has increased from 124 grams to 471 grams.
