March 7 , 2026 15 hrs 0 min 22 0
  • Scientists have discovered “Dark Oxygen” about 4,000 metres below the Pacific Ocean, where sunlight does not reach.
  • Dark Oxygen refers to oxygen found in deep-sea regions without sunlight.
  • The discovery was made in the Clarion–Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean.
  • Scientists observed oxygen levels increasing near polymetallic nodules on the seafloor.
  • Polymetallic nodules contain metals like manganese, nickel and cobalt.
  • This discovery challenges the idea that oxygen is produced only through photosynthesis.
