Lebanon’s Parliament abolished the death penalty, making Lebanon the first Middle Eastern country to formally abolish capital punishment.
The law replaces the death penalty with life imprisonment and aggravated hard labour for the most serious crimes.
Lebanon had not carried out an execution since 2004, but death sentences were still being issued.
The law follows years of efforts to abolish capital punishment and Lebanon’s support for United Nations (UN) resolutions calling for a moratorium.
At least 85 people were on death row in Lebanon as of January 2026, according to Amnesty International.
