- The deposit contains about 16 million tonnes of rare earth elements like yttrium and dysprosium metals.
- It was found nearly 6,000 metres deep using the advanced drilling vessel Chikyu.
- Rare earth elements are important for electric vehicles, wind turbines and modern electronic devices.
- The deposit may meet global demand for some key elements for up to 700 years.
