  • Researchers discovered a rare case of gynandromorphy in a freshwater crab species in Silent Valley National Park, Kerala.
  • The species Vela carli showed both male and female characteristics (gynandromorphy condition).
  • This is the first recorded case of such condition in the freshwater crab family Gecarcinucidae.
  • The species is endemic to the Western Ghats and found in tree holes inside the forest ecosystem.
