  • The IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi adopted a motion recognising India’s Dugong Conservation reserve.
  • The IUCN urged collaboration with the Government of India and local bodies to enhance marine conservation.
  • India’s first Dugong Conservation Reserve is located in Palk Bay, Tamil Nadu.
  • The reserve was established on September 21, 2022, under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
  • The Dugong Conservation Reserve covers an area of 448.34 square kilometres in northern Palk Bay.
  • It protects over 12,250 hectares of seagrass meadows that serve as feeding grounds for dugongs.
  • Dugongs (Dugong dugon) are listed as Vulnerable to extinction on the IUCN Red List.
