- The Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC), a collective of sex workers in Kolkata, celebrated 30 years of existence in July 2025.
- DMSC was founded in 1992 to distribute condoms and combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic, based on a consensual survey commissioned by the World Health Organization.
- Sonagachi is home to around 12,000 sex workers, with DMSC representing over 28,000 across West Bengal.
- The community has fought discrimination to obtain ration cards, Aadhaar cards, and bank accounts, creating the USHA Cooperative for financial independence.
- Many sex workers join voluntarily to support their families, while DMSC has rescued over 2,000 trafficked women through counselling and rehabilitation.
