The Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC), a collective of sex workers in Kolkata, celebrated 30 years of existence in July 2025.
DMSC was founded in 1992 to distribute condoms and combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic, based on a consensual survey commissioned by the World Health Organization.
Sonagachi is home to around 12,000 sex workers, with DMSC representing over 28,000 across West Bengal.
The community has fought discrimination to obtain ration cards, Aadhaar cards, and bank accounts, creating the USHA Cooperative for financial independence.
Many sex workers join voluntarily to support their families, while DMSC has rescued over 2,000 trafficked women through counselling and rehabilitation.
