The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released the Emissions Gap Report 2026.
Warning that limiting global warming to 1.5°C without significant overshoot is no longer possible.
Global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions slightly declined to 58.4 gigatonnes of CO₂ equivalent (GtCO₂e) in 2025, but fossil-fuel CO₂ emissions continued to rise.
G20 members, excluding the African Union, accounted for 76% of global emissions, while their emissions excluding land-use sectors increased by 0.7% in 2025.
To achieve the lowest possible 1.5°C overshoot, global GHG emissions need to fall by 18% by 2030, 45% by 2035 and 69% by 2040, compared with 2025 levels.
Large-scale CO₂ removal from the atmosphere will be required to return global warming to 1.5°C by the end of the century.
