Uruguay passes law legalizing euthanasia, becoming the first predominantly Catholic Latin American country to do so.
The law allows euthanasia for patients suffering from incurable illnesses causing unbearable pain without requiring a terminal diagnosis or waiting period.
Euthanasia must be performed by healthcare professionals, and patients must be mentally competent, confirmed by two doctors.
Assisted suicide, where patients self-administer lethal medication, is not permitted under the law.
