- India will invest ₹11 lakh crore (125 billion US dollars) to expand its high-speed road network by 2033.
- The plan includes the construction of 17,000 kilometers of access-controlled roads, allowing speeds up to 120 kilometers per hour.
- As of March 2025, India’s national highway network covers over 146,000 kilometers, but only 4,500 kilometers meet high-speed standards.
- Around 40 percent of the proposed high-speed corridors are already under construction and expected to be completed before 2030.
- Remaining projects will begin by 2028 and are targeted for completion by 2033.
- Projects with over 15 percent returns will follow the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, allowing private toll collection.
- Other projects will use the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), where the government pays 40 percent of construction costs upfront.
- In 2024–25, the National Highways Authority of India spent ₹2.5 trillion, a 21 percent rise from the previous year.
- For 2025–26, the central government has allocated ₹2.9 trillion for road and highway development.
