  • False smut (haldi rog) is a fungal disease in rice caused by Ustilaginoidea virens, infecting crops during flowering.
  • The disease appears as yellow and later greenish-black fungal growth on a few grains in a panicle.
  • It reduces grain weight, causes chalkiness, lowers seed germination, and leads to significant yield loss.
