India will collaborate with a French company, likely Safran, to co-develop and produce engines for its fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
Safran is expected to enhance its M88 engine to deliver up to 120 kilonewtons (kN) of thrust with afterburner for the AMCA’s twin-engine configuration.
Prototypes are expected by 2026–27 with AMCA’s first flight targeted for 2028, aligning with India's push for defence self-reliance.
Safran also plans to set up a centre of excellence for gas turbine technology in India to strengthen local design and manufacturing capacity.
