Indian scientists have made a history by producing two new climate-smart rice varieties using a 21st Century breeding technology called "genome editing".
These improved rice varieties named as 'DRR Dhan 100 (Kamala)' and 'Pusa DST Rice 1'.
These varieties are considered climate-smart and climate resilient.
The greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 20 per cent (32,000 tons).
With this, India became the first country in the world to develop Genome-Edited or GE rice varieties.
The two new varieties incorporate no foreign DNA, so they are not genetically modified (GM).
