Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena flagged off India’s first high-altitude wildlife safari focused on snow leopard trails in Ladakh.
The safari is operated by the Snow Leopard and High-Altitude Nature Conservation (SHAN) Society in collaboration with the Union Territory’s Forest Department.
The safari routes cover Hemis National Park, Changthang and Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary, along with other regions of Ladakh.
Ladakh is home to 477 snow leopards, according to the report.
The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is classified as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List.
The project aims to support wildlife conservation while providing economic benefits to local communities.
