The first scientific assessment has established Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve as a major stronghold of the fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus).
At least 57 unique fishing cats were identified across more than 450 square kilometres of the reserve.
The fishing cat is classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
The report was released on February 22, which is observed as Fishing Cat Day.
