  • Auramine O is illegally added to foods to imitate turmeric/saffron or enhance sweets.
  • It is a synthetic diarylmethane-based yellow dye banned for use in food in India.
  • It appears as bright yellow needle-like crystals, insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol and DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide).
  • It is used legally in textiles, leather, printing, microbiological staining, laboratory reagents, paper, and ink.
  • Toxicity risks include liver and kidney damage, enlarged spleen, endocrine disruption, and mutagenic effects.
  • It is classified by IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) as possibly carcinogenic to humans.
  • Chronic exposure may cause long-term genetic and metabolic disorders.
