Freshwater Crabs in Western Ghats

  • Two new species of freshwater crabs from the Gecarcinucidae family have been discovered in Kerala.
  • Kasargodia sheebae, a new genus and species, was found in a mountain stream at Ranipuram Hill Station in Kasaragod district.
  • Pilarta vaman, a small-sized species named after the Hindu deity Vaman, was found in a stream at Gavi in Pathanamthitta district.
  • The crabs are rare and face threats from human activity, mainly due to increasing tourist flow to their habitats.
