  • First Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity Target Rules were notified for Four Industrial Sectors.
  • The government notified the legally binding Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity (GEI) Target Rules, 2025.
  • The rules cover 282 high-emission units in cement, aluminium, chlor-alkali, and pulp and paper sectors.
  • Emission intensity is measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per unit of product output.
  • Industries meeting targets earn carbon credits; those that fail must buy credits or pay compensation.
  • The rules aim to support India’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement by reducing emissions.
