  • The Tamil Nadu Food Processing and Agriculture Export Promotion Corporation (TNAPEx) has applied for a GI Tag.
  • It is seeking a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the famous Koil (temple) idli or Kancheepuram idli.
  • It is made using coarsely ground parboiled rice and black gram (urad dal)
  • It gives it a dense and grainy texture
  • It was unlike the smooth and fluffy South Indian idlis.
  • It is one of the offerings at the Sri Varadharaja Perumal temple in the town.
  • This town is mostly known for its silk sarees.
  • The Madurai Agribusiness Incubation Forum was the facilitator for this application.
  • Madurai Agribusiness Incubation Forum is an initiative of NABARD and TNAU.
