- Gas flaring in 2024 had released 389 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) worldwide.
- Unburnt methane contributed 46 million tonnes to the total emissions.
- Global flare volumes reached 151 billion cubic metres (bcm), the highest since 2007.
- Nigeria’s gas flaring increased by 12 per cent despite only a 3 per cent rise in oil production.
- Flaring intensity in Nigeria rose by 8 per cent, marking a second year of increase.
- The top nine flaring nations accounted for 76 per cent of global flaring in 2024.
- Global gas flared globally was nearly equal to Africa’s annual gas consumption of 162 bcm.
