- The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change revised the Green Credit Programme methodology on August 29, 2025.
- Green credits for tree plantation will now be awarded only after five years of restoration work and achieving a minimum of 40 percent canopy density.
- One green credit will be given for each tree that survives beyond five years on restored forest land.
- The new rules replace the 2024 notification, which allowed immediate credits based on the number of trees planted and certified.
- Green credits are now non-tradable and non-transferable, except between a holding company and its subsidiaries.
- Verification through designated agencies and a claim report is mandatory before green credits are issued under the new system.
