The Karnataka Cabinet approved this Bill, which will be tabled in the Winter session of the State legislature in Belagavi.
The Bill defines hate speech as any expression made or shared to create injury, disharmony, enmity or hatred based on religion, race, caste, gender, language, disability or other factors.
Punishment for a hate crime includes imprisonment from 1 to 7 years and a fine of ₹50,000.
Repeat offences carry 2 to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of ₹1 lakh.
The Bill empowers authorities to block or remove hate crime material from any platform, including electronic media.
Karnataka has become the first state in India to introduce legislation specifically targeting hate speech
